BEFL Issued New Overview of Russia’s Largest Agricultural Landholders

June 24, 2024

The new Overview compiled by BEFL includes 77 companies, the total area of which is 18.5m ha. For the first time in the history of publishing the Overview, the TOP-10 stayed the same without any position changes.

The latest data published by Rosreestr as of January 01, 2023 shows that the total area of agricultural land owned by organizations grew by 371.4  % – from 5.0m ha to 23.6m ha. On average, agricultural companies purchase up to 1m ha of agricultural land every year.

Over the past 11 years (starting from 2014) the total farmland area controlled by the overview participants grew by 10.8m ha. The annual gain fluctuated between 0.6m ha and 1.4m ha. The wide range is attributable to two factors. First, the currently rated companies gain farmland. Large companies become larger; middle-sized companies catch up. Second, the number of companies in the Overview is growing. The growth is triggered by the expansion of stronger market players and their increasing transparency. Every year more and more companies disclose information and become known to the public.

Overview 2024 has 77 companies, +4 to the last year’s ranking. Their total farmland portfolio amounted to 18.5m ha, which exceeds last year results by 1.1m ha. Three companies left the ranking, seven companies are the newcomers.

The total land portfolio of the TOP-5 this year is 4.6m ha – 25 % of the total land bank of the ranking; the total land portfolio of the TOP-10 is 7m ha – 38 % of the total land bank of the ranking. TOP-10 scaled up by 158k ha, almost all of that to be credited to the TOP-5. The ten leading companies kept their last year positions.
